Salt Lake City, Utah
House of Worship, Site and Facade
Role:
Lead Lighting Designer (Interior & Exterior)
Team:
FFKR Architects, Hunt Electric
A cornerstone of the multi-year seismic upgrade and campus master plan, this comprehensive restoration revitalizes the 1893 pioneer landmark, pairing cutting-edge infrastructure and preservation standards with the building’s monumental granite architecture:
Ceremonial & Historic Interiors: Designed entirely new interior illumination across historic council rooms, progression spaces, and new ceremonial halls, utilizing quiet architectural downlighting and perimeter accents to emphasize original decorative plasterwork, historic murals, and restored architectural details.
Historic Fixture Restoration: Removed, structurally evaluated, rewired, and retrofitted hundreds of original crystal chandeliers, bronze pendants, and ornate wall sconces with custom dimmable LED sources, preserving historic patina while integrating long-term maintenance access.
Art Glass Illumination: Designed uniform, high-CRI backlighting solutions for historic stained-glass windows and decorative skylights, using low-profile edge-lit and planar arrays to provide consistent color saturation and luminance from both interior and exterior perspectives.
Granite Façade & Spires: Developed a tiered exterior illumination scheme featuring concealed grazing fixtures and multi-optic floodlights to highlight the quartz-monzonite masonry, decorative battlements, and six soaring spires, anchoring the nighttime visual hierarchy of downtown Salt Lake City without unwanted uplight or glare.
